Agenda
Topic: IMACS
Goal: Requesting facility instrument status for IMACS at the Fall SAC meeting (the meeting after April 2004).
The pressing need for servicing the IMACS F/2 camera, the likelihood that Alan Dressler would not be traveling to LCO for that work, and the difficulty in scheduling that work in the first place forces us to put off setting a date for staff training.
David Osip will write a short syllabus for staff training.
Communications protocol: Wendy Freedman appointed Michael Rauch to be the IMACS instrument liaison today, the first appointment for a Magellan facility instrument. Instrument liaisons facilitate communication between the observatory and the instrument team towards the goal of instrument commissioning. As such, Michael will work closely with the instrument PI, Alan Dressler, as well as the IMACS instrument team, towards commissioning. We agreed that the communications protocol would be for Michael Rauch to work directly with David Osip, Magellan instrument scientist, with communications copied to the IMACS mailing list (<imacs AT lco DOT cl>).
The facility instrument checklist was introduced; there was some discussion on the difference between the proposal requirements and the "reviews and acceptance" section (most of the items marked "not applicable" in the proposal reappear as requirements for final review and acceptance). The "commissioning plan," originally marked "NA" was changed to "to-do" status.
The IMACS task list, appended to the original meeting announcement, was discussed for a short time and now has its own page (IMACSTasks; don't edit the copy below).
The rest of the meeting was devoted to planning the upcoming (early April) F/2 camera lens replacement work at the observatory.

Topic: IMACS
Goal: Requesting facility instrument status for IMACS at the Fall SAC meeting (the meeting after April 2004).
| Item | Responsible | Priority |
| Document power-on procedure | Birk? | A |
| Subsystem init procedures | Birk? | A |
| Update user docs | Dressler? | A |
| Grating tilt limits (e.g., 1200 l/mm grating good only to 8000A). Tyson says you can move the hard limit on the tilt mechanism. Can we? Should we? | Hare? | A |
| DSP errors, saturation, lost frames - Power supplies regulation in rack? Reset of the DSP server is the usual solution; sometimes you need a power cycle. Osip thinks it has to do with the power supply regulation or the DSP voltage requests. DSP is loaded at CAMGUI startup or reload command. Feb/Mar new DSP boards will be sent down. Greg/Ian coming down? Phillips: What's the procedure for recovery? Reset DSP menu entry (reset the server). Birk says: Note that first image is always bad after this. | Thompson? | A |
| Focus - require offest to Z03 in zoffset of approximately 1.0 for focus across field. Osip: Do we remake a template with the offset in it or use an offset goal in the guider? There was disagreement on what really should be done; Skip had a solution that nobody knows about except Alan D. | WHO? | A |
| Mask Server initialization failure (need documented recovery procedure and the fix) | Birk? | B |
| Mask Server incorrect mask insertion and improper extraction. How do we diagnose and solve this problem Mask server goes to the incorrect location but tries to put the mask in. Next time, the process doesn't work. Dressler suggests noting the time so they can look at the log file. Also looking at the slide with the air off and moving the slide by hand. | Hare? | B |
| Disperser Server initialization failure | Birk? | B |
| Fix air pressure problem. Frank will solve the general instrument compressed air supply problem by connecting the shop compressor. Instruments will be replumbed to attach to this air supply. Oil/water coalescing filters, dessicant, and particulate filters will be installed at the entrypoint in the dome. Instruments may also want to install smaller versions of similar systems. | Perez? | B |
| Gratings tilt initialization failure | Birk? | B |
| Filter server initialization failure | Birk? | B |
| Filter server failure to change positions (solved via re-initialization) | Hare? | B |
| Focus verification at f/2 and f/4 (internal value) | Osip? | A |
| Shutter failures (f/2 and f/4) | Hare? | B |
| Observing procedures/cookbooks - what modes are supported? how is this determined? | Phillips? | B |
| Flexure... creation of model and implementation of control | Birk? | B |
| Cryotiger troubleshooting and procedures (are we operating safely?) Need spare o-rings and gaskets as well as gas charge bottle(s). Coordinate with MagIC Cryotiger work. | Osip? | B |
| Mask file generation procedures and documentation. Priority of alignment stars? Require minumum number of alignment stars (test for CCD gaps). Add software version to mask file (if not already present) | Phillips? | B |
| Problems with slits near edge of mask... perhaps worse with new masks...Wavyness around the edge is worse, and in the mask area. There were some from the initial shipment so it's not totally unknown. Autofocus on the laser cutter. | Dressler? | B |
| Data Analysis Software... distribution, documentation, support | WHO? | B |
| Laser cutter problem: the undulating edges of the masks are causing failed slits there. Ken Clardy suggest upping the power. | WHO? | B |
| Guider probes lose track of position. Usually Y or focus. This is believed to be "mostly a controller problem" by MMP and FP (Jose concurs). | Hare? | B |
| Disperser Server clamp warnings (yellow caution) | Birk? | B |
