Matching Models to Merging Galaxies: Lost and Found in Parameter Space
Joshua Barnes (IfA, U Hawaii)
ABSTRACT
Galactic collisions provide an elegant explanation for peculiar galaxies, but very few collisions have been dynamically modeled. I describe a new approach to navigating the parameter space of galactic collisions and finding initial conditions which reproduce the observed morphology and kinematics of peculiar galaxies. The method is tested on a randomly-generated sample of galactic collisions; in many cases it accurately recovers the initial conditions of these encounters.
